Pack up the campaign offices and go home. The results of the 2012 election are in, and in a crushing victory, President Obama won every electoral vote, leaving Mitt Romney with nothing but his millions.

According to California Tortilla, that is.

The Rockville-based fast Mexican chain—and potential election ethics scofflaw—polled diners in its 33 stores spread across D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania based on two limited-time menu items.

The “Presidential Burrito Bowl” campaign pitted a dish representing the respective origins of both candidates, with each store casting its vote according to the best-selling meal. And in all 33 locations, the Obama-branded Chicken Teriyaki Luau Bowl was more popular than the Romney-labeled Mexican Meat-Loaf Bowl.

To be fair, both sound pretty bland. Coincidence?

The Obama dish features grilled chicken, mixed vegetables and pineapple wedges atop a bed of brown rice, playing off the president’s Hawaiian origins; and the Romney bowl, taking inspiration from the former Massachusetts governor’s Leave It to Beaver disposition, is a Mexican-spiced meat loaf accompanied by sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes. It’s probably best that both are in tortilla-less form; neither would seem to make a good burrito.

But at every California Tortilla location, the Obama bowl dominated, with nearly 92 percent of customers in Waldorf, Md. preferring the chicken and pineapple dish.

The promotion is routine for California Tortilla, which claims the victor of its quadrennial contest has gone on to win the White House in every election since 1996.

California Tortilla sold the special menu items beginning August 13 and served about 20,000 of the dishes. The margin of error was filled with chips and queso.
