Former Gov. Tim Kaine won the U.S. Senate race in Virginia, keeping the seat in Democratic hands with the retirement of Sen. Jim Webb, DCist can project. With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Kaine is leading former Republican Sen. George Allen by a margin of roughly 57,000 votes.

Kaine, who served as Virginia’s governor from 2005 and 2009, served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011.
