The reaction wasn’t quite as explosive as 2008, when D.C. residents—and residents of cities across the country—flooded the streets to celebrate the election of the United States’ first black president, but when President Obama won a second term last night, many around Washington found reason to fill the streets again.
Obama supporters poured on to U Street NW and in front of the White House. On Pennsylvania Avenue, many of the revelers came over from George Washington University. People hoisted Obama-Biden campaign placards and at least one cardboard cut-out of the president. Chants of “Four more years!” erupted for a while, as television reporters from around the world beamed back to their home audiences raw footage of jubilant Americans.
As for any explosions, there was at least one. Washington City Paper’s Darrow Montgomery landed his lens on a couple of fireworks bursting over U Street.
