WEDNESDAY

Do you remember what first spoke to you about rock and roll? Was it the power chords that were actually powerful? Maybe it was a slow build up to a triumphant chorus. The Whigs have perfected these elementsband with Kuroma they’ll put them on display at the Black Cat. $15, 8:00 p.m.

>> Comet Ping Pong: Habibi, the Mallard, NOX. $10, 8:30 p.m.

>> Rock and Roll Hotel: SSION, House of Ladosha, Glitterlust. $12 in advance/$14 day of show, 8:30 p.m.

THURSDAY

If it seems like we’ve got a soft spot here for loud but melodic Scottish bands, it’s because we really do. Frightened Rabbit may be the most popular and Mogwai is in a class of loud all its own but we love the forlorn yet ferocious beauty of The Twilight Sad and have for some time. They’ll be at Rock and Roll Hotel with Errors and The Orchid. $12, 8:00 p.m.

>>9:30 Club: CocoRosie. $20, 10:00 p.m.

FRIDAY

One of the heavier bands out there to include a cello in their lineup, the reliably fantastic and prolific Earth will come to Rock and Roll Hotel off the strength of Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light: II. Eagle Twin and Stebmo open. $14, 9:00 p.m.

>> Red Palace: Fresh & Onlys, Quilt, Shark Week. $10 in advance, $12 day of show, 9:00 p.m.

>> Howard Theatre: Paul Banks (of Interpol). $15 in advance/$17 day of show, 8:00 p.m.

>> 9:30 Club: Gary Clark Jr., Kat Edmondson. Sold Out, 8:00 p.m.

SATURDAY

Yesterday’s song of the day artist, The Joy Formidable blew our minds two years ago with an intimate show at the Black Cat Backstage and since then, we’ve seen the pedal-happy rockers at places like the Black Cat Mainstage and the Verizon Center opening for the Foo Fighters. They’re returning to a small venue for a show at St. Stephens’ Church that will likely be similarly powerful. $20, 8:00 p.m.

>> Fillmore: Yelawolf, Rittz, Trouble Andrew, DJ Vajra. $20, 8:00 p.m.

>> Comet Ping Pong: Trummors, P.G. Six, Alex Minoff. $10, 10:00 p.m.

>> Rock and Roll Hotel: Justin Jones, Luray, Vagabond Union. $12 in advance/$15 day of show, 9:00 p.m.

SUNDAY

When Grass Widow came to Comet Ping Pong earlier this year, fresh off the release of the simultaneously fragile and razor-sharp Internal Logic, they put on an impressive display of chemistry and musicianship. For anyone who regrets missing them, they’ll be back at Comet with support from Garland of Hours, Hand Grenade Job and DJ Baby Alcatraz. Just remember, Comet Ping Pong is small, so don’t text during their set.

>> Black Cat: Pinback, Solos. $15, 8:00 p.m..

>> Red Palace: Tamaryn, Young Prisms. $10, 10:30 p.m.
