D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and city officials will appear at the D.C. World War I Memorial this morning to commemorate those who have served their country and ask that the military include D.C.’s flag during ceremonies in which all the states’ flags are flown.
According to a press release from Norton’s office, she is pushing both the Senate and President Obama to require that D.C.’s flag be displayed during ceremonies where flags of the 50 states are flown. Norton’s plea stems from D.C. residents Tomi Rucker and Michael Boyd, whose son Jonathan Rucker recently graduated from Naval Station Great Lakes. During the ceremony, they wrote Norton, all 50 state flags were on display, but D.C.’s wasn’t.
“Today’s D.C. Veterans Day commemoration is about respect for the District of Columbia and the citizenship of our residents, epitomized by the treatment of Seaman Jonathan Rucker at his graduation from Naval Station Great Lakes,” Norton said in the press release.
