Death Grips

Death Grips

TUESDAY

Sacramento’s Death Grips are no stranger to controversy (their penchant for NSFW album covers is one such example). Recently dropped from their label, the abrasive hip-hop group—which features prolific drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill—is in town promoting No Love Deep Web. Head to Rock and Roll Hotel and decide if the songs live up to the hoopla. Mykki Blanco opens. $15, 8:00 p.m.

>>Black Cat: Spoonboy, Jason Anderson, Al Scorch & Adam Mcbride-Smith. $8, 8:00 p.m.

>>U Street Music Hall: The Rezillos, 7 Door Sedan. $20, 7:00 p.m.

>>Verizon Center: The Who present Quadrophenia, Vintage Trouble. $83.50-148.85., 7:30 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

Whether singing heartbreaking odes to lost love or, uh, the gestation of the sacred beetle, Mirah‘s lo-fi bedroom pop is always transfixing. After a lovely collaboration with Thao last year, here’s hoping tonight’s stop at Rock and Roll Hotel hints at some new materials on the horizon. With Mount Moriah. $15., 8:00 p.m.

>>9:30: Yeasayer, Sinkane. Sold Out, 7:00 p.m. (Thursday’s show is also Sold Out).

THURSDAY

Tonight’s eclectic concert calendar begins with a pairing of singer-songwriters whose approach couldn’t be more disparate. Omaha’s beloved wunderkind, Conor Oberst, will perform his brand of tortured self-conscious folk rock under his own name, a less bombastic incarnation of his (seemingly) retired Bright Eyes moniker that brought him worldwide attention in the early aughts. Opening is Daniel Johnston, an underground legend whose naive ballads and iconoclastic artwork has made him one of indie rock’s most beloved outsiders. At the Warner Theatre. $35, 8:00 p.m.

>>Rock and Roll Hotel: …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, The Coathangers, Black Clouds. $18, 8:00 p.m.

>>Black Cat: Horse Feathers, Frank Fairfield. $15, 8:00 p.m.

>>U Street Music Hall: Matthew Dear, Light Asylum. $17, 7:00 p.m.

>>DC9: Ash, Dot Dash, Reputante. $15, 9:00 p.m.

FRIDAY

Back in 2008, Oregon’s The Helio Sequence put out its criminally overlooked fourth album, Keep Your Eyes Ahead. Tonight, they’re at the Cat supporting another unheralded gem, this year’s Negotiations. With Ramona Falls. $15, 9:00 p.m.

>>9:30: G. Love and the Special Sauce, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad . $30, 8:00 p.m.

>>Howard Theatre: Kaki King, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. 8:00 p.m., $15.

SATURDAY

David Bazan

These days, everyone in the music world–from arena rock gods to indie rock nobodies–dutifully observe anniversaries. As the Stones commemorate their 50th year (I suppose the past 25 years of absenteeism count) and The Who trot out Quadrophenia one last time (maybe), it’s only fair less accomplished acts celebrate their own mini-milestones. Tonight at The Black Cat, David Bazan Band will perform Pedro the Lion’s Control in its entirety, although “celebrating” an emo album detailing a collapsing marriage sort of feels like a bridge too far. But if you can’t beat ’em, bring on the Indian Summer! Stagnant Pools open. $15, 9:00 p.m.

>>Red Palace: Regents’ record release show–free cd with admission!, Metz, Imperial China. $12, 9:00 p.m.

>>9:30: Dan Deacon, Height with Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, Alan Resnick. $15, 8:00 p.m.

>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Lamb of God, In Flames, Hatebreed, Sylosis. $35, 7:00 p.m.

SUNDAY

A visit from Stephen Merritt and The Magnetic Fields has become something of a seasonal treat. Over the past few years, the band has averaged a new album every two years, releasing its latest Love at the Bottom of the Sea back in March. While it might not be there most consistent, any excuse to have the notoriously curmudgeon Merritt in town is more than welcome. Tonight, they’ll play their second of two nights at Sixth and Eye Synagogue–Saturday night’s show is sold out. With Emma Straub. $35, 8:00 p.m.

>>The State Theatre: NRBQ, Blue Dogs. $18, 8:00 p.m.
