For every big breakout alternative act in the ’90s there were a thousand other that lined the shelves of dollar bins everywhere. Irish three-piece Ash happens to be one of those bands. But let’s get one thing straight—Ash is only in the dollar bin because they could never break through in the U.S., while they remain reasonably big in their home country and you can’t really fuck with the three-album run of 1977, Nu-Clear Sounds, and Free All Angels. It’s a better idea, however, to try to find their overseas-only singles collection, Intergalactic Sonic 7″s. The band hasn’t released a full-length album since 2007’s lackluster Twilight of the Innocents, but they have been keeping busy with their A-Z singles series and they are hard at work at new music set for release sometime next year. This year, however, is their 20th anniversary, and tonight they are playing one of D.C.’s smaller rooms, DC9. Today’s Song of the Day “Burn Baby Burn” is one of their most well-loved singles, and ten years after its initial release, it still holds up.
Ash plays tonight with Dot Dash and Reputante at DC9. Tickets are $15.
