Even Shadow Senator Paul Strauss had a car in the parade. And a classic one, to boot.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus’ steamy personal life was the fodder for the cold open of last night’s episode of Saturday Night LIve, and a D.C. literary institution served as the setting for the late-night yuk-yuks. The sketch, a sendup of C-SPAN’s Book TV series, featured Paula Broadwell reading her Petraeus biography, All In at an appearance at Politics & Prose, the venerable Chevy Chase bookstore and intellectual salon.

Only in this version of All In, Broadwell—played by Cecily Strong—gave a far more lurid portrayal of Petraeus’ time as commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan:

The deadbolt slid into place with a loud thunk, and I knew the junior officers outside could easily tell what was going on, but I was beyond caring. The general reached into his desk drawer and pulled something out. ‘Put this on, Paula.’ It was a synthetic wig cut Louise Brooks-style and cotton candy pink. ‘No, David, it makes me feel like a dirty girl,’ I whispered. ‘But you are a dirty girl, Paula,’ he replied. ‘You’re my dirty girl. Now get on that couch.

The Politics & Prose audience, perhaps expecting more military policy than lurid scenes ripped from an E.L. James novel, leaves in disgust, save one wide-grinning attendee played by Fred Armisen.

As it happens, the real-life Broadwell and her co-author, Washington Post local editor Vernon Loeb, made the requisite stop at Politics & Prose during their book tour in February.
