Led by Chuck D as comic foil to the jester Flavor Flav, PE presented itself as the guiding light for socially-aware hip-hop. >> “Afrobeat For Ya Soul” continues its monthly appearance at Bossa with DJ Underdog spinning Afrobeat tunes and Cheick Hamala. $5. 9:30 p.m.

>> Leela James clearly finds inspiration in soul singers from 1960s but has been able to find her own voice. The L.A. native will be at the Howard Theatre where she’ll be joined by the DMV’s own Debórah Bond. $22.50 in advance / $25 at the door. 8 p.m.

Saturday:
>> Queens native Action Bronson has taken the hip-hop world by storm this year with a rhyme flow similar to his idols, Ghostface and Kool G. Rap. He’ll be at the Howard Theatre for the D.C. stop of his “The Rare Chandeliers” tour. $15 in advance / $18 at the door. 8 p.m.

>> A celebration of ’90s R&B and hip-hop music, “Reminisce” is taking a holiday twist this month and DJ Quartermaine will be supplying the sounds at Liv. Free before 11 p.m.. 9:30 p.m.
