WMATA has “Metro Opens Doors” and “Forward.” The Circulator has “Ride. Explore. Connect.” Taglines are an easy and attractive way to sell the value of mass transit; they tell you what a bus, train or even bike can do for you.

Now the D.C. streetcar network—hopefully kicking off next year along 2.2 miles of H Street and Benning Road, expanding to a full 37 miles across the city eventually—is similarly looking for a simple, concise way of selling what its worth is.

Yesterday the city’s streetcar planners sent out an online survey allowing anyone to rate six proposed taglines: District at Your Doorstep, Your Next Connection, Let’s Go, Uncover the District, Make Your Next Connection, or The District Discovered.

We’re a little underwhelmed by the choices. That being said, Portland, the gold standard of the streetcar revival, doesn’t have that great a tagline either: “Hop on and get carried away!” I’m not sure if that’s scary or an invitation for mischief.

There’s room for some improvement, though. Instead of using the formal “District,” use “D.C.”—D.C. at Your Doorstep, Uncover D.C. or D.C. Discovered roll off the tongue a little better than the proposed alternatives. And sticking with the “Connect” motif seems to make sense—part of the idea of the network is plug in holes that currently exist in the city’s public transit network.

If this were up to me—thankfully, though, it’s not—I’d go with this: “Single-Tracking Isn’t a Problem For Us.”

Leave your own ideas in the comments. We’ll send the best ones along to D.C. streetcar officials.
