OMG, tell Drudge!

The National Building Museum played host to the annual Christmas in Washington television special last night, and of course there was a hint of international scandal as President Obama and his family arrived.

One of the featured performers last night was Psy, a South Korean rapper who rose to global fame this year on a song that you may or may not be sick of at this point. Either way, there’s no helping avoiding “Gangnam Style” at this point; it’s the most popular YouTube video of all time, and people are still sending us emails with their own versions of the invisible-horse dance. (Seriously, guys. Stop.)

But on Friday, the re-emergence of one of Psy’s pre-“Gangnam” songs fueled speculation that by having the Korean star on the bill for a show in front of the president, it could deliver an embarrassing moment to the Obama administration. In a 2004 song called “Dear American,” written as a response to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Psy rapped:

Kill those fucking Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives
Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture
Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers
Kill them all slowly and painfully

News of this anti-American diss track was ample Drudge fodder, and sparked concerns over whether Psy would have to be dropped. He wasn’t, and issued a contrite apology.

Anyway, Christmas in Washington went off as planned. Host Conan O’Brien told some jokes, the first family posed with some kids dressed as North Pole elves and the musical program went off as scheduled, including performances from Diana Ross, Demi Lovato and, yes, Psy. (Again, as we said Friday, any big and showy Christmas concert that does not include either Darlene Love or Mariah Carey isn’t worth a damn.)
