The management at The Getaway, the Columbia Heights bar outside which Patrick Moran, the son of Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, says it did not serve either Patrick Moran or his girlfriend the evening of December 1.
Moran, 23, pleaded guilty yesterday to simple assault and was sentenced to one year of probation, though he was originally charged with felony domestic violence after an incident police described as a scene in which he grabbed his girlfriend by the head and threw her into a metal trash barrel outside The Getaway. A statement from Representative Moran’s office and one from the victim—which was transmitted by the congressman’s spokeswoman—called the entire scene an “accident.”
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, The Getaway says that Moran, 23, was not a patron that night:
You may have noticed our name in the news today. An awful incident occurred outside of our bar a few weeks back. Contrary to the reports we are certain that the individual did not patronize our bar that night. That being said, we are so disheartened to know that such a thing took place on our corner.
But acknowledging that it has been dragged into this story, The Getaway is trying to make something of a silver lining. Fifteen percent of its sales on Sunday will be donated to Break the Cycle, a nonprofit organization that works to combat domestic and date-related violence.
