It’s the holiday season, so that means you’re on the search—possibly at the last minute—for gifts for friends and family. Over the course of the next few weeks, we’re going to dig up the D.C.-made and D.C.-themed gifts that we’d love to get—and would be sure to give. If anything catches your eye that you think would be worth including, feel free to send it along.
There are only a few days left until Christmas, but if you’re one of those late planners who waits until the very end to decorate a tree, don’t worry. You can dress up that freshly cut spruce or plastic pine in your favorite team colors.
All of Washington’s sports teams are selling ornaments featuring their logos, so on Christmas morning, you can tear into your gifts under the shimmering glow of the Nationals’ curly W, the Wizards’ woebegone swoop, D.C. United’s vaguely Soviet shield, the ‘Skins’ burgundy-and-gold helmet or even the Capitals’ forgotten eagle.
We like the Nats’ the best, and not simply because of the thrills they gave D.C. in 2012. The white orbs emblazoned with the team’s logo is simple and will blend in well with more traditional ornaments. United’s is quite bold, although the strong red sphere is equally festive. The same can’t be said for the Wizards’ ornaments, the basketball-colored base of which seem about as natural on a tree as the actual team’s players do on the court this season. (Hey-o!)
And, though plenty of people miss the Capitals, should an NHL franchise be commemorated with a sparkly position on the tannenbaum this year? Not bloody likely. If anything the NHL deserves nothing but lumps and lumps of coal, and maybe a visit from those European versions of Santa Claus who beat up the naughty kids.
