Senator Kerry and President Obama in 2009 (White House)

As Hillary Clinton prepares for life after the State Department, President Obama has been trying to figure out who will take her place as Secretary of State. The Republicans dashed U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s hopes last week, so now Obama is moving towards nominating former presidential candidate and Senator John Kerry for the position.

The Washington Post reports, “Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and his selection all but guarantees a swift, smooth path to confirmation. The lawmaker has been a frequent foreign policy adviser and confidant to Obama, and his long experience means he has bipartisan advocates in the Senate.” A press conference is expected later this afternoon.

With Kerry leaving his Senate seat, that means former Senator Scott Brown, the moderate Republican defeated by Elizabeth Warren last month, could run again.

And Clinton’s next move? Probably thinking about 2016—or 2013 in NYC—and having hipster pizza.
