MOVIES: The AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring) is presenting two movies that will probably get overlooked by the Academy Awards and another that deserves to be forgotten by everyone. Arbitrage, which stars Richard Gere as a crooked hedge fund manager, screens at 5:20 p.m. Richard Linklater’s Bernie, a darkly comic look at the real-life murder of a grouchy, but wealthy, widow by the young funeral director who had become her closest companion, screens at 7:30 p.m. And then there’s The Paperboy, screening at 9:45 p.m. It sucks.

HOMERICS: Playwrights Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare attempt a one-man adaptation of Homer’s The Iliad in their new show, An Iliad. Scott Parkison carries the burden of being the epic poet retelling the tale of the Trojan War. DCist will have a full review of this new show at The Studio Theatre (1501 14th Street NW) later this week. Tickets $39-61.

EVERYBODY BEATS THE WIZ: Or maybe not. The Wizards host the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Verizon Center (601 F Street NW) tonight, hoping to get their fourth win of the season. And, hey, they might have a chance. The Cavs used to have this player from Akron who possessed once-in-a-generation talent, but ever since he bolted, they’ve been pretty lousy. Cleveland is very beatable, and perhaps that’s why StubHub tickets to tonight’s game between the NBA’s worst and third-worst teams start at $9.

OTHER STUFF: The immediate post-Christmas offerings are light, but presumably all your favorite bars that were closed last night should be re-opening today.
