Reporters covering ‘Skins head coach Mike Shanahan’s news conference today were joined by a new colleague: Robert Griffin III.
While Shanahan was previewing his plans for the ‘Skins playoff game Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, Griffin sneaked into one of the back rows of the briefing room at the team’s practice facility in Ashburn, Va. To the apparent elation of his fellow reporters, and barely able to contain his own laughter, the rookie quarterback tossed his coach an easy question.
“Coach, we just wanted to know,” Griffin began, before Shanahan interrupted him: “You got me there. Who is this guy?”
Griffin eventually collected himself and asked the coach about how he spent the holidays. “What did you do for New Year’s?” he asked.
Shanahan, taciturn as ever, replied with the straight dope. “Tried to put a good game plan together. Wasn’t sure how healthy you are, so it was kind of hard without you calling me.”
So, not only is Griffin a great quarterback, he can also get a solid answer out of Mike Shanahan. Although, we do have some questions of our own. For starters, has Griffin been picked up by one of the news organizations that cover the ‘Skins for spot playoff coverage? That would seem like a bit of a conflict of interest.
Moreover, the ‘Skins have seemed particularly stingy with their media credentialing of late. How do we know this? Well, we were initially told DCist had approval to cover last Sunday’s regular-season closer against the Dallas Cowboys, but our request was yanked at the last minute.
