Anyone who believed that the revolution last month of the Mayan long-count calendar spelled imminent doom for the universe was stupidly mistaken, but on the eve of the supposed annihilation, one D.C. record store was visited by an apocalyptic sight.
On December 20, one day before the rumored end of the world, Som Records (1843 14th Street NW) was visited by none other than Oderus Urungus, lead singer and chief warlock of the Richmond-based horror metal band Gwar.
Oderus Urungus—real-name Dave Brockie—was accompanied by a film crew from the music website Vinyl District as he rifled through Som’s selection of new and used vinyl. Among Oderus’ selections were Frank Zappa’s Over-Nite Sensation and Asia’s self-titled 1982 debut. (Which prompted a growly, though brilliant, singalong by the costumed performer.) It was a much happier scene than the last time we heard from Oderus Urungus, when he expressed his grief over the death of the National Zoo’s giant panda cub.
Brockie also expressed a preference for King Crimson, which he called “another band you young punks don’t know shit about!”
