>> A six-year-old Silver Spring boy who was suspended late last year for holding his hand in the shape of a gun and pointing it at another student will have his suspension rescinded and his record cleared, reports NBC 4. After the December incident, his parents complained that the suspension would remain on his record and dog him for the rest of his academic career. The incident took place shortly after the Newtown massacre.
>> Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has announced a plan that would allow teachers from Teach for America to work at commonwealth schools, writes the Examiner. The proposal comes as part of a package of education reforms that McDonnell plans to introduce when the General Assembly convenes next week. Teachers’ union officials have already expressed skepticism with the idea, noting that Teach for America teachers often only stick around for two years, while many teachers get better the longer the stay in a particular school.
>> A Maryland legislator wants to stop the practice of speed camera vendors getting a portion of each fine handed out by the camera, reports WJLA. Maryland State Senator Brian Frosh, who represents Montgomery County, says the cameras were never intended to provide a per-ticket payment to vendors, but a loophole has allowed the practice to continue. (Some vendors take as much as 40 percent of the $40 fines doled out.)
