>> After a two-year hiatus, the District is again using breathalyzers to aid in the enforcement of its drunk driving laws. Mayor Vince Gray signed into law yesterday two bills passed by the D.C. Council late last year that strengthen D.C.’s enforcement against drunk driving, including one that allows prosecutors to use breathalyzer results as admissible evidence in court, WAMU reports.
>> Many Virginia residents affected by the derecho storm last June were cut off from their communities’ 911 services for days, and the Federal Communications Commission will release a report today saying the situation occurred because phone companies failed to follow their own storm procedures. The Washington Post reports the most of troubles stemmed from a loss of power in a Northern Virginia system operated Verizon that acts as a “traffic cop” for all calls in the region.
>> Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) wants to make sure that if D.C. government employees are snacking on the job, they’re eating healthy snacks. Cheh introduced legislation this week that would require the some 4,000 vending machines scattered across District buildings to stock healthier options, The Washington Examiner reports.
