It’s hard not to get panicky about the flu this season, especially with media reporting on widespread outbreaks and people struggling to find somewhere to get themselves a flu shot. But if you’re in D.C., consider yourself lucky (for now): the city is one of the few places in the country where flu cases have been on the lower end.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, D.C. is only reporting “local” incidents, while Virginia, Maryland and every other state east of the Mississippi are currently reporting “widespread” reports of the flu. (See the map here.) The D.C. Department of Health has reported only 310 cases thus far in D.C.; by comparison, 2,300 such cases have been reported in Maryland, more than in past years.

Yesterday Mayor Vince Gray tried to calm jittery residents, saying that there isn’t yet an epidemic in the city, reports the Post. He encouraged residents to get a flu shot, though several pharmacies in town have reported running out.

If you want updated information on flu-related information in D.C., though, don’t rely on the Department of Health—its website hasn’t been updated since last year.
