BACKYARD JAMS: Backyard’s unique sound has been floating around D.C. for the last 25 years, and tonight the band hits the Howard Theatre (620 T Street NW) to celebrate their quarter-century anniversary. Doors at 11 p.m., and the show kicks off at 11:59 p.m. Tickets range in price from $35 to $65.
SATURDAY
ROLLER DERBY: Celebrate the start of 2013 with the D.C. Rollergirls at our inaugural bout of the year today! Cheer for the team of your choice (or all of the teams!) as the Cherry Blossom Bombshells face off against the DC DemonCats at 4 p.m., and stick around to watch the Majority Whips take on Scare Force One at 5:45. The fun takes place at the D.C. Armory (2001 East Capital Street SE); tickets go for $16.85 and are on sale here.
PAINT BRANCH IN-STORE: Former Q and Not U bandmates Chris Richards and John Davis are back together, this time as Paint Branch. You’ve heard one of their songs here, but today head down to Red Onion Records (1901 18th Street NW) for an in-store performance. 6 p.m. Free.
NSO IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: The incredibly popular NSO in Your Neighborhood program is back, bringing some of the city’s best classical musicians to hip locales in U Street, Shaw and Logan Circle. Tonight NSO musicians Jeffrey Weisner, bass; David Teie, cello; Ruth Wicker Schaaf, viola; and the Eric Wheeler Trio perform two 90-minute sets of classical and jazz works at Twins Jazz Club (1344 U Street NW). Shows at 8 and 10:30 p.m.
SUNDAY
COFFEE TASTING: If you know anything about coffee, you know that Petworth’s Qualia Coffee (3917 Georgia Avenue NW) roasts its own. Now the coffee shop is bringing back its twice-monthly coffee tastings, where you’ll get to try three different single-origin coffees side-by-side while learning about where each of the coffees come from and what makes each unique. 2 p.m. Free.
WINE WALK: Let’s not front: you’re in this for the wine, not really the walking. The Washington Wine Academy is hosting a 1K Wine Walk in Crystal City (2200 Crystal Drive), where you’ll get to sample up to 20 of the 50 wines that are available. There are six half-hour-long heats between 1-4 p.m. left that you can sign up for; tickets are $40 or get a VIP pass for $70 that allows you anytime access.
BIRTHDAY PARTY: Today National Geographic will mark its 125th Anniversary with a birthday party at National Geographic Museum (1145 17th Street NW). The museum will be offering free Georgetown Cupcakes to guests (while supplies last) in addition to special anniversary “Frame What Matters” photo props, which allow users to give their own photos the signature Nat Geo yellow border. The museum’s current exhibits include Birds of Paradise, 1001 Inventions, Desert Air, and American West, all of which will be open. Free.
