A driver somehow navigated his car into the C&O Canal this afternoon in Georgetown, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Police said that citizens who witnessed the incident said that speed was involved, and that the car went into the canal around 33rd and Water streets NW. Officer Hugh Carew, an MPD spokesman, said an adult male driver was removed from the car and taken to the hospital; it is unknown if any intoxicating substances played a part in the incident.
