It is hard to believe Freakwater, the alt-country duo of Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge, has been around since 1989 but hasn’t had the success of other acts from the same time (like Uncle Tupelo). The band hasn’t released an album since 2005’s Thinking Of You, but both Irwin and Beveridge stayed busy playing in side projects. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their album Feels Like The Third Time, their first for their long-time label Thrill Jockey, and the two are playing the album front to back at DC9 tonight. Feels Like The Third Time was reissued on vinyl last year on Record Store Day by Thrill Jockey, and features seven original songs and five covers of classic country tracks. Today’s song of the day is the first track of the album and one of the original songs, “My Old Drunk Friend.” The country ballad is a classic track and one of their most celebrated songs from their massive catalog.
Freakwater plays tonight with Grain Theif at DC9. Tickets are $12.
