This kind of got lost in the shuffle of inauguration yesterday, but D.C. natives and their neighbors can look forward to cheering on some of their own in Super Bowl XLVII next month, provided they’re prepared to back the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers roster includes standout tight end Vernon Davis, one of four Dunbar High School graduates currently in the NFL. (The others are Davis’ brother, Vontae, an Indianapolis Colts cornerback; Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs; and Tampa Bay Buccaneers return specialist Arrelious Benn.) Additionally, 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman grew up just over the border in District Heights, Md., and played for Forrestville High School in Suitland.

We interviewed Vernon Davis’ high-school coach, Craig Jeffries, last year when the 49ers made a run through the NFL postseason (only to be nearly shut out by the New York Giants.) Jeffries, who at the time was the receivers coach at the University of New Mexico, said of Davis, “He’s driven and wants to win.” Jeffries, who has since returned to the area as the head coach at Oxon Hill High School, also warned fans of opposing teams not to underestimate Davis’ skill as a blocking tight end, in light of Davis’ reputation as one of the top receivers at that position.

Besides, fans of eliminated teams will need something to put their stock in on February 3. In our interview last year, Jeffries also had another suggestion: “If you can’t root for the [‘Skins], root for the D.C. kids.”
