You can call the Washington Wizards a lot of things, but do not call them the worst team in history. It’s just not factually correct.

A buzzer beater by Jordan Crawford yesterday lifted the Wizards over the Portland Trailblazers 98-95, securing the still-pretty-awful team its ninth win of the season. Why is that important? Because the record held by the Philadelphia 76ers still stands: the team only won nine games in its 1972-73 season. (The Charlotte Bobcats only won seven games last year, but that was in a shortened 66-game season.)

So, for now, the Wizards are only tied for the distinction of being the worst team in NBA history. Should they win two more games, they’ll surpass the 1993 Dallas Mavericks and 1998 Denver Nuggets, though we’re probably jinxing them by writing this.
