Talk about living up to expectations.

A 22-year-old D.C. man was sentenced to 20 months in prison yesterday after pleading guilty to assaulting a federal marshal. Not only did Roderick Hill assault the marshal, though, but he did so while he was in court for a preliminary hearing related to a completely separate assault charge.

What would have provoked such an assault on an officer of of the court? The marshal was trying to confiscated Hill’s iPhone after he saw and warned him against using it on two occasions. Phones are allowed in D.C. Superior Court, but they cannot be used while in courtrooms.

Hill also pleaded guilty to the initial assault charge he faced, stemming from a June 2012 attack at a Metro station. He will serve his sentences concurrently, and will remain in a federal prison for 20 months and be released on three years of supervised probation.
