>> Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and House Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) have been stuck with the unfortunate task of deciding what to do with a surprise redistricting plan that the State Senate sneakily passed on Monday, reports the Post. The plan, which would decrease the number of Democratic districts in the state, was passed by a single vote while a Democratic senator was in Washington on Monday for President Obama’s inauguration; it has been lambasted as a crass power grab that could imperil McDonnell’s remaining legislative priorities.
>> Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is proposing a bill that would allow voters to register and cast ballots on the same day, writes the Washington Times. Under his proposal, which exists in 12 states and in D.C., a resident could register and vote at the same time during the early voting period, but not on election day. It is seen as a way to expand opportunities for voting, and as a counterpart to controversial initiatives in various states that require voters to show ID at the polls.
