The District’s AlertDC messaging system is a handy tool for getting the latest weather, traffic, and utility advisories from the city’s various agencies, but once in a while, a message seemingly intended for internal use makes it into the public feed. That was the case last night when a cryptic one-liner came out of the Metropolitan Police Department: “Per Officer Wingblade, Air support is available for midnights.”

To what—or to whom—did that item refer? Is “Officer Wingblade” a new nickname for MPD’s helicopter, known as “Falcon One,” or some new kind of mysterious aerial device? Nope. It’s actually Officer Michael Wingblade, who, befitting his name, is part of MPD’s air support unit.

Wingblade, according to his Facebook profile, is one of the department’s tactical flight officers. And flying helicopters appears to be one of just a few cool abilities. His language skills, for example, are quite extensive, as he claims to have Chinese, Vietnamese, Punjabi and Swahili in his repertoire. He also appears to get around when he’s not at the helm of Falcon One, judging by a photo gallery from a 2011 trip to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He’s also a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, one of the premier comprehensive flight schools.

Here’s what we know about Officer Wingblade:

  • Has comic book-good last name.
  • Flies helicopters.
  • Speaks a bunch of languages.
  • Occasionally shows up on the other side of the world.

Also, he definitely wins the title of most appropriately named law enforcement officer in D.C., a prize formerly held by former U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Fear. (Just imagine the quotations followed by courtesy titles.) So, is this guy the most interesting man in the Metropolitan Police Department? Consider his Facebook profile’s epigraph: “I’m a man of many languages, I don’t often drink beer, but when I do, I drink Coors Light.”

First one’s on us.
