>> Slightly extended weekend! The federal government will open at noon today, while D.C. public schools and the D.C. government will be on a two-hour delay.
>> In November, Maryland residents approved a law that allows undocumented immigrants who graduate from state high schools to enjoy in-state tuition rates at certain universities. But as the Post reports, the wording of the law means that students who have not yet graduated but want to take college courses at Montgomery College will pay three times more than their peers to do so. Montgomery College is the only institution being affected by the loophole because it offered in-state tuition rates to undocumented immigrants before the November referendum; under the new law, rates for those students that have not yet graduated from high school will have to go up.
>> Last week’s news of a $400 million D.C. surplus has led to competing calls that the money be saved or be spent, reports the Examiner. Some legislators want the money set aside for the city’s rainy day fund, which now sits at $1.2 billion. Some activists, though, want to see money put towards social programs like services for the homeless, education and affordable housing.
>> Virginia Attorney General and Republiucan gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli opposes a plan to allocate the commonwealth’s electoral votes by district instead of the current winner-take-all system, writes Slate. “I think winner-take-all is part of how a state matters as a sovereign entity. You know, our side would have gotten more votes this go-round, but I want people to have to fight to win the whole state. It makes the state, as a state, matter more,” he said.
Briefly Noted: Dog on Secret Service detail for Vice President Joe Biden falls to death … D.C. officials hope that budget autonomy goes somewhere this year … Local suspect in drug trial case that led to Supreme Court case will represent himself during third trial … More D.C. buildings get green roofs.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2011, the ice cream guy became a meme and Pat Collins made The Daily Show’s Moment of Zen. In 2010, the Metro board approved a 10-cent fare hike.
