>> Some D.C. Council members and other top city officials think Inspector General Charles J. Willoughby might not be up to the task of investigating some of the District’s biggest ethical puddles, The Washington Post reports. In recent weeks, Willoughby has been questioned by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) on what appears to be the inspector general’s office’s slow pace on investigations into D.C. Lottery contracts and a cheating scandal in D.C. Public Schools.
>> The Metropolitan Police Department spent $2 million over a five-year period on legal costs associated with attempting to get rid of some officers accused of being bad seeds, Washington City Paper reports. Chief Cathy Lanier fired 18 officers, but was forced to re-hire them, and attempted to fire them again. Internal affairs investigations were muddled by pushy supervisors, leaving the entire process seem politically motivated.
>> Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s plan to get rid of the state’s gas tax and increase sales taxes is moving through the House of Delegates, The Washington Examiner reports. McDonnell wants to get rid of the 17.5-cent per-gallon tax on gasoline and increase the state’s sales tax from 5 percent to 5.8 percent.
