>> Legislators in Montgomery County are working on a bill that would ban smoking on most county-owned property, reports WAMU. During a debate last week, a committee added bus shelters and bus stops to the places where smoking would no longer be allowed. At the same time, county-owned golf courses were taken off of the list of places where smoking would be verboten.

>> A Virginia Senate committee will consider a bill today that would force all sellers, not just licensed gun dealers, to obtain background checks of potential gun buyers, writes NBC4. The bill has failed in the past, but supporters hope that the Newtown massacre and recent polling showing that Virginians largely support closing the loophole will make it easier to pass this time around.
