The Central Union Mission on the corner of 14th and R Streets NW has long been a homeless shelter, but as the Post reports today, this spring the large corner building will be emptied and redeveloped into boutique condos that will cost between $419,900 to $849,900:
The new space at 14th and R will include about 50 units, about 800 to 1,000 square feet each, mostly one- and two-bedroom condos with a couple of studio apartments as well. There will be no underground parking. Colbert said he expects the project to take about 14 months to complete. The new structure will incorporate the four buildings already there to create what Colbert calls “boutique” condos. That means that for the most part, the condos will not be uniform in design. Colbert is working with about 30 different floor plans for the units in the development.
The 140 men who used to live in the shelter will move to a temporary home before settling in at a new facility located in a historic D.C. school building near Union Station. The building’s former use won’t be forgotten, though—one of the developers is toying around with the idea of naming the condo building “The Mission.”
