Want to ride a bike from D.C. to the Pittsburgh area, or vice verse? You’ve always been able to, courtesy of the C&O Canal up to the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania and the Great Allegheny Passage from there up to Iron City.

But as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported yesterday, a final segment of the trail is set to be completed in May, with a groundbreaking in June. With the work complete, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to make the entire 330-mile trip without interruption or detours.

The work currently being done is on the final mile of the Great Allegheny Passage, which connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md.; from that point, the C&O Canal heads 180 miles south into D.C.
