Solange has sold out her show at the Black Cat on Feb. 21. Photo by Stefania D’Alessandro. MONDAY
As odd as it may seem that an a capella group could book a date at a venue as large as the Fillmore, we are living in the age of Glee. Texas-based Pentatonix came to fame on a different television program, The Sing-Off, where they won Season Three. Option for the week if you absolutely want to feel like you’re in college again. $35, 8:00 p.m.
>> Black Cat: Harry & the Potters. $12, 6:30 p.m.
>> Kennedy Center: Christylez Bacon, Nistha Raj, Wytold. Free, 6:00 p.m.
TUESDAY
Delaware indie rock lifers The Spinto Band have probably been through every venue in D.C. at this point, but the sunny pop tunes continue to have a shelf life here in the District. So, they are back tonight at DC9 to try to fool us into thinking that it’s not the dead of winter with their good-natured appeal. Sun Club and Hurlebaus open. $10, 8:00 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
Tame Impala’s Lonerism made a lot of Top 10 (or at least Top 20 lists) at the end of last year, winning over audiences with its dreamy psychedelia. As such, it’s probably no shock that their show at the 9:30 Club is sold out. Consult the usual channels for unused spares. The Growl opens. Sold Out, 7:00 p.m.
strong>>> Black Cat: The Sea Life, Tan Vampires, Old Abram Brown. $10, 8:00 p.m.
>> Birchmere: Stephen Lynch (first of two nights). $39.50, 7:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Beyoncé’s younger sister Solange may never star in a Super Bowl halftime show (emphasis on “may”), but she has impressive pipes of her own, a following in the fashion world and a more avant-pop appeal. She’s sold out the first of her two shows at the Black Cat but it’d worthwhile to consult Craig for anyone that might have an extra. Sold Out, 9:00 p.m.
>> DC9: Road To Paid Dues Tour featuring Murs, Prof, Fashawn, Black Cloud Music. $16, 8:00 p.m.
>> 9:30 Club: Madeon, Fareoh, Lightwaves. Sold Out, 9:00 p.m.
FRIDAY
In the most stacked night of concerts this winter (seriously, none of you folks could have played on Saturday?) perhaps the most exciting show is at the Black Cat. One of our favorite local bands, Foul Swoops opens for two bands whose meteoric rise is imminent. Parquet Courts‘ Light Up Gold is chock full of quick staccato gems that recall some of the post-punk mainstays in the Black Cat jukebox and Baltimore’s Roomrunner takes the spirit and spark of ’90s era grunge and and brings it into this decade with some extra noise. Catch all three of these bands now and brag about seeing all of them on one bill in 2015. $12, 9:00 p.m.
>> 9:30 Club: Jonathan Richman. $20, 7:00 p.m.
>> DC9: Snowden, The Mean Season, Ocean Versus Daughter. $10, 9:00 p.m.
>> Comet Ping Pong: Southern Problems, Miyazaki, Short Lives. $10, 10:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
Seeing U Street Music Hall owner Will Eastman is always a treat, no matter the venue, but it will be especially nice to see him in his own tight soundsystem along with Green Velvet and Chris Nitti. $10, 10:00 p.m.
>> DC9: Ratking, Beyond Modern, Ardamus. $10, 9:30 p.m.
SUNDAY
During the 9:30 Club’s birthday celebration a few years ago, we saw Scream, Trouble Funk and Henry Rollins in the same room and it was fantastic. Of course, that show sold out with almost unparalleled speed, so it’s a good thing that all three are back for another affair. Hank will be hosting this super-long Punk-Funk Throwback Jam which will also include sets by Black Market Baby, Youth Brigade and Worlds Collide (the aforementioned punk) and Shady Groove, DJ Kool, Static Disruptors and Junkyard (the aforementioned funk.) There will also be special guest slots from DJ Tommy B and Stinky Dink and the show starts nice and early so as to give the audience an extremely full dose of both punk and funk. $25, 3:00 p.m.
>> Galaxy Hut: Alarms & Controls, The Torches. $5, 9:00 p.m.
