No, you won’t be seeing coins with Dave Matthews or Jefferson Davis on them anytime soon. Yesterday a Virginia Senate panel killed a bill that would have allowed the commonwealth to study the possibility of creating its own currency, which could be used in case the Federal Reserve system ever collapsed.

The bill was sponsored by Del. Robert Marshall (R-Prince William), who has backed such measures in the past. It was passed by a House committee two weeks ago, but faltered in the Senate, where legislators worried about the national mockery that could come from such a plan.
