More changes are coming to the city’s roads.

Yesterday the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board voted to approve a number of changes to its long-range transportation plan, including a variety of projects on D.C. roads. The changes includes lane reconfigurations on some major and minor roads, many to better accommodate buses and bicycles.

On I Street NW from 13th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, for one, D.C. plans to turn one of the five lanes available during peak hours into bus-only. On New Jersey Avenue NW from H to N Streets, D.C. is proposing to change the existing four lanes of northbound traffic into two lanes in each direction. Seventeenth Street from Benning Road NE to Potomac Avenue SE will see two lanes of southbound traffic turned into one lane for cars and a bike lane, while East Capitol Street from 40th Street to Southern Avenue will lose one of three travel lanes in each direction. Additionally, a new bicycle and pedestrian trail will be building alongside a long stretch of South Capitol Street.

Other roads have recently been reconfigured to slow down traffic, add bike lanes and make crossings safer for pedestrians. As part of Mayor Vince Gray’s Sustainable D.C. plan unveiled yesterday, city officials want to increase biking and walking to 25 percent of all commuter trips.
