It is hard to make your own identity and forge your own path, when you are always in the shadow of your very successful sister, but over the last ten years, Solange has found her voice and comfort zone. Sure, her first album came from the same machine that made Destiny’s Child, but after taking some time off, she returned with a more focused an even better album in Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Solange was throw-back while her sister was on some future shit. While that album impressed critics, it never set the pop world on fire, but Solange kept going and found some alliances in the indie rock scene, the very scene that she hipped both Beyonce and Jay-Z to.

Last year Solange hooked up with Dev Haynes, fresh off releasing his R&B record as Blood Orange, and the pair co-wrote eight tracks and created the mini-album True. The album was just what fans and critics need to hear to separate Solange from both her past and Beyonce’s shadow. Tonight Solange makes her first of three scheduled appliance in the area promoting True, and today’s song of the day is a highlight from the album “Locked In Closets.” The track sounds like something Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would’ve produced for Janet Jackson when she was in her peak, with various studio flourishes that make it an ear worm.

Solange plays tonight and February 27th at the Black Cat. Tickets are Sold-Out. But don’t fret, Solange is also playing Sweetlife Festival on May 11th at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Tickets are on sale now.
