You may recall a few weeks ago we wrote about one of the petitions on the White House’s “We the People” site that called for building a Death Star, the planet-killing machine from Star Wars.
The effort got a lot of press and well over the 25,000 signatures, guaranteeing an official response—and the White House issued a great one. Paul Shawcross, the head of the White House Office of Management and Budget’s Science and Space Branch, went full nerd in the answer, amusingly arguing that it would cost around $850,000,000,000,000,000 to build. Additionally, he said, the administration doesn’t support blowing up planets and that a Death Star—if built—could be destroyed by a single-man ship (assuming of course that ship’s pilot used the Force.)
It gave everybody a laugh, and that was the end of it.
Or was it? Last night we spotted this sign for a rally about the Keystone XL pipeline on Rhode Island Ave NE. It looks like an Obama campaign sign, with the same font and a remixed version of the Obama logo —which looks suspiciously like a certain fully-armed and operational battle station.
So does that mean the White House is quietly supporting the effort? Unfortunately not. The rally was sponsored by the Sierra Club, and while it did draw more than 50,000 people to the mall, no Bothans were harmed. But while the White House has opted not to build a Death Star, might the Sierra Club be planning otherwise? You know—destroy the planet to save it?
