Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale in Veep. (HBO/Bill Gray)
Still reeling from the putrid train wreck that is Netflix’s House of Cards? Fortunately, the other premium-network show about the federal city but actually filmed in Baltimore is about to begin its second season.
HBO just released the first teaser for the new season of Veep, Armando Iannucci’s satire about the supposedly second-most-powerful person in the United States. Last time we saw Vice President Selina Meyer, played with unending frustration by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, she and her staffers were, well, no better off than they were at the beginning of the show. (Seems that Iannucci, a Brit, has a bit more clairvoyance about the state of American politics than House of Cards creator Beau Willimon.)
The teaser doesn’t give away any of what Iannucci has planned for the second season, but the characters seem no worse—or better—for the wear in this long glamour shot. Selina is still pushing around Gary, her personal aide played by Tony Hale; Gary is still last in the pack; Mike, the slovenly press secretary played by Matt Walsh, is just as unkempt; and no, Selina still has no access to her boss, the never-seen president.
The new season of Veep begins April 14.
