FRIDAY
JOURNALISTS JAMMING: Hit the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW) this Friday for journalists turned musicians at Journopalooza on the main stage (8:00 p.m., $20 in advance or $30 day of) or head to the backstage for Sugar Shack Burlesque (8:45 p.m. and 11 p.m., $12 in advance or $15 day of).
STANDARD RE-OPENS: It’s slowly getting warmer and the days will eventually get longer, which means that it’ll soon be perfect for some outdoor beers and barbecue. Standard, the outdoor barbecue joint at 14th and S Streets NW, opens its doors today at 5 p.m. after being closed for the winter.
DJ NIGHT: Post-punk classics. John Peel faves. Obscure DIY records. Maybe a little proto-punk. Definitely some krautrock. New stuff? Sure. As long as it sounds like old stuff. Join Rick Taylor, Brandon Grover and the City Paper’s Jon Fischer for We Fought the Big One, D.C.’s highly unwieldy, Belgian beer-fueled celebration of all these things and more. At Marx Cafe (3203 Mount Pleasant Street NW). 10 p.m. Free.
SATURDAY
DONUTS: Awaken your inner Homer Simpson and devote this Saturday to donuts at Brightest Young Things’ First Annual Donut Fest at Penn Social (801 E Street NW). Enjoy “all-you-can-gorge free donut samplins” from District Doughnut and Coffee, Astro doughnuts & fried chicken, Golden Brown Delicious, Zeke’s DC Donuts, Eventide Restaurant, Jackie’s, Farmers Fishers Bakers, Heller’s Bakery, Poste, and Orso. There will also be brunch cocktails, Saturday morning cartoons, and a donut eating competition. 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. $12 in advance, $15 day of.
BREWER’S BALL: The Ninth Annual Brewer’s Ball brings together handcrafted microbrews from more than a dozen of the region’s best microbreweries and brewpubs and cuisine from several local restaurants. Net proceeds from this event benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and its mission to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of lives for those living with the disease. The ball takes place at the National Building Museum (401 F Street NW) and starts 7 p.m.; tickets start at $130 and sales close at 3 p.m. today.
SUNDAY
MARRIAGE: Getting hitched? Head to Engaged! magazine’s bridal showcase at The Willard Intercontinental Hotel, The St. Regis Hotel, and the Decatur House on Lafayette Square. Limos will whisk you from one venue to another where you can peruse gowns, flowers, photography, cakes, invitations, and more while you enjoy food and drinks. 3:00-7:00 p.m. $65.
CHOCOLATE LOVERS UNITE: It’s the second of the two-day Chocolate Lovers Festival in the City of Fairfax. Head to the Old Town Hall (3999 University Drive, Fairfax) to sample chocolates; check the schedule of events for other options. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.
STEWED: Winter’s coming to an end, so help bid it farewell with the Red Derby’s Red Meat Stew Off (3718 14th Street NW). Taste and vote on all the entries from 7-9 p.m. Free.
NORDIC FOOD: As part of the Nordic Cool 2013 festival at the Kennedy Center (we previewed it here), join award-winning chefs Mads Refslund of Denmark, Morten Sohlberg of Norway, and Ulrika Bengtsson of Sweden for a demonstration of New Nordic Cuisine. Audience members will be able to watch the cooking unfold in person and on large screens in the Grand Foyer. 6 p.m. on the Millennium Stage. Free.
