Erykah Badu remains one of the most influential artists in R&B. Since her breakout album Baduism led the charge of the neo-soul movement, Badu has won countless awards and gained a huge fan-base. Tonight Badu plays the Fillmore in Silver Spring for a second night of looking back. Last night she played Baduism and tonight she plays her critically acclaimed album Mama’s Gun.

Mama’s Gun was a very highly anticipated record when it was released in 2000, three years after Baduism. Mama’s Gun is not a sophomore slump, but a triumph of a record. Recorded with a superstar team including Questlove and J Dilla, the album is much like another breakout star, D’Angelo’s Voodoo, released the same year and made with similar teams. Today’s song of the day is the first single off Mama’s Gun, and still Badu’s highest Billboard’s Hot 100 charting song, “Bag Lady.” The track was an instant hit, with Badu expanding her sound and bounding more like a live document then her previous records. The track retains its classic status and still sounds fresh compared to the R&B of today.

Erykah Badu plays tonight at Fillmore Silver Spring. Tickets are sold out.
