>> With sequestration having hit late last week, Virginia is bracing for the worst. According to the New York Times, the harshest of what the $85 billion in spending cuts will bring will be felt in the commonwealth, which grew rich due to increased federal spending and could see enough furloughs—some 90,000 Defense Department employees, for one—and other cuts to send the state into recession.

>> The April 23 special election for an At-Large seat on the D.C. Council is just around the corner, and the Examiner reports that while the race remains fluid, the sole Republican in the race is thought to be one of the primary contenders. Former councilmember Michael Brown is best known across the city, but Mara, who currently serves as the Ward 1 representative on the State Board of Education, has a natural base among the city’s Republicans. Mara and Brown are up again five other contenders: Elissa Silverman, Paul Zukerberg, Interim Councilmember Anita Bonds (D-At Large), Matthew Frumin, and Perry Redd.

>> The discord between D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth Ellerbe and rank-and-file firefighters has apparently gotten serious enough that it’s gone virtual. The Washington Times reports that someone played a prank on Ellerbe by changing his Wikipedia entry to say that he had resigned on February 28, which he didn’t. According to city officials, the change was made from a D.C. computer.

Briefly Noted: One City? Not so much … D.C. firefighters and management not getting along … Real headline: “Shenandoah student government president ousted” … Carjacking leads to Saturday night D.C. police chase … It’s been almost two years since the investigation into Mayor Vince Gray’s shadow campaign began … Burglars hitting residences in Dupont Circle and Logan Circle.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2011, Kwame Brown gave up his luxury ride for something less loaded and a D.C. food truck was confronted by U.S. Park Police. In 2010, 27 were arrested after a University of Maryland celebration got too, well, celebratory.
