The Kennedy Center announced the lineup for its 2013-14 season. And, among the highlights is a series of hip-hop shows featuring, of all things, the rapper Nas performing his 1994 debut album Illmatic for two nights.

And, oh yeah, Nas will be accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra Pops. “One Mic: Hip-Hop Culture Worldwide,” which is being produced in collaboration with New York’s Hip-Hop Theater Festival, will also include performances by K’Naan, B-boy and B-girl dance competitions, and several DJ sets. The hip-hop series will take place in 2014.

Meanwhile, the Kennedy Center also announced a theater schedule including an ambitious original production of Side Show, a 1997 musical that was a critical darling but commercial flop when it debuted on Broadway. Bill Condon, the director of the films Dreamgirls and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, is slated to helm this show. Touring shows making stops include The Lion King, Peter and the Starcatcher, Elf, Sister Act, Flashdance – the Musical, Million Dollar Quartet, and An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.

See below for the Kennedy Center’s full lineup of events in the coming season, which could very well be subtitled “Michael Kaiser’s Last Stand.” (He’s stepping down later this year.)
