One of the joys of Bryce Harper’s rookie season was watching the 19-year-old center fielder use his cannon-like arm to cut down opposing teams’ runners who thought they had an easy path to the next base. Well, with the addition of Denard Span, the Washington Nationals are moving Harper over to left field for his sophomore year, and while that will still afford him plenty of opportunities to throw out runners approaching second base, third base, and home plate, it’s kind of far from first base.
But Harper is nothing if not ambitious, and yesterday, during a spring training game against the Houston Astros, Harper fielded a single to shallow left by Brandon Laird, who started rounding toward second. Via The Washington Post, here’s what happened next:
From the other side of the field, Harper sensed an opportunity and fired the ball to first baseman Tyler Moore. Think about that: From left field, Harper threw behind a runner, trying to pick him off at first base.
It didn’t pan out, though. Moore was caught off-guard by the fact that, you know, a left fielder would attempt to throw someone out at first, and the ball bounced in front of him before flicking away. Still, Davey Johnson wasn’t mad Harper attempted the improbable throw-out. “You can’t keep him bottled up,” the Nationals’ manager told the Post. “It had a lot on it, too, when it got there.”
