If someone steals the seat off of your bike—hey, it happens—it goes without saying that maybe you shouldn’t ride it home. Not only is it potentially dangerous, but it’s against the law in D.C.

According to D.C. law, “No person shall operate or ride a bicycle other than upon or astride a regular seat attached to the bicycle.” (You’re also not allowed to have a friend sit on the bike with you as you ride.) Now, this could well be one of those laws that no one really enforces, right? Well, kind of—but not totally.

Last year the D.C. Department of Public Works cited one person for riding a bike without a seat; in 2011, no people were cited, while in 2010 it was two cyclists and in 2009 a single person.
