In memory of the Examiner’s local staff, this was taken from an old Examiner front page headline.UPDATE: The Washington Examiner is ceasing daily publication and will relaunch in June as a conservative political weekly.
The Washington Examiner today followed in the footsteps of the Washington Times, axing its local section, according to a tweet from transit reporter Kytja Weir.
According to people with knowledge of the situation, some 30 reporters are likely to be laid off as of mid-June. Additionally, the Examiner will cease publishing on a daily basis, opting instead for a weekly magazine format.
This is bad news for local news. Despite having to publish insanely short accounts of usually complicated issues, the Examiner’s local reporters have been dedicated to covering their beats—and doing so relentlessly. The paper has graduated some impressive talent, including the Washington Business Journal’s Michael Neibauer, the City Paper’s Loose Lips columnist Alan Suderman, Bloomberg’s Freeman Klopott, and others.
More details as they become available.
OK. So The DC Examiner is closing it’s local section. That means I’m in the market for a job. Any leads welcome! Kytja AT hotmail DOT com
