With the Supreme Court hearing arguments about the right to marriage of gays and lesbians and public opinion rapidly changing in favor of marriage, it is a wonder why mainstream hip-hop continues to be a homophobic state. Sure, there have been some advances, like Frank Ocean’s admission that he fell in love with a man, and heavyweights like Jay-Z saying gay is OK, but too often are artists forced into the closet. Well, the underground has been having a queer renicsance with artists like Le1f and Mykki Blanco leading the pack.
Mykki Blanco’s talent cannot be understated. His latest mixtape, Cosmic Angel, is some straight dope. His slow, casual flow conjures a sedative-laden Busta Rhymes. With the help of collaborator Brenmar, Blanco has been creating music that while it gets pigeonholed into the “queer rap” scene is miles beyond. Blanco performs tonight with Dope Body and Coup Sauvage and the Snips at Comet Ping Pong. Today’s song of the day is Blanco’s track “Kingpinning (Ice Cold)” Atop a Brenmar beat, Blanco’s slow flow fits perfectly making an excellent standout.
Mykki Blanco plays tonight with Dope Body and Coup Sauvage and the Snips at Comet Ping Pong. Tickets $12.
