Is your city-issued garbage can a little worse for the wear? Fear not, you may soon be getting a new one.

As part of his 2014 budget, Mayor Vince Gray is putting some of the city’s largesse—$2 million, all told—into finally replacing all of the official garbage cans—the Supercans—given to most residents. Unless the provision is stripped out of the budget by a councilmember, the Department of Public Works will soon start a five-year process of replacing the garbage cans.

More importantly, administration officials say that they are also looking to eliminate replacement fees; as of 2011, DPW has been charging $62.50 for the 96-gallon Supercans and $45 for the smaller 32-gallon garbage can and recycling cans.

And as we recently reported, officials also said that they are considering shrinking the size of the Supercan while increasing the size of recycling cans. Under an existing proposal, both garbage and recycling cans would be 64 gallons.
