Javelin can best be described as sugar boiling over. Their candy melodies are so sweet you get toothaches listening to their tracks. On their new album, Hi-Beams, Javelin is no longer a mishmash of loads of samples but a veritable live band. The results are varied; there are some real lows on the record. However, the highs are phenomenal. The band plays at the Black Cat tonight, and today’s Song of the Day, “Light Out,” is the first track from Hi-Beams. The track has a marching drum beat and catchy vocals that get stuck in your head like cavities in your brain.

Javelin play tonight with Raleigh Moncrief and Jamaican Queens at the Black Cat (1811 14th Street NW). Tickets $12.
