DCist, a website covering local news, arts, sports, and events in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area, seeks a weekend editor. Position requires four to six posts every Saturday and Sunday, plus other responsibilities as needed.

The ideal candidate should have no hesitation to call sources on weekends, an appetite for breaking news and finding viral stories, and a strong social media presence. DCist offers an unvarnished look at life in the nation’s capital and fuels the discussion of local affairs.

We’re looking for a self-motivated journalist who can write with a informative, engaging, and witty voice while producing a healthy mix of originally reported content as well as some aggregated posts. Strong news judgment and a firm grasp of Associated Press style are crucial, but so is a sense of humor.

The weekend editor is also responsible for managing DCist’s social media presence while on duty, including our Twitter and Facebook profiles. Other responsibilities include light photo editing, working with contributing writers, and communicating with the other sites in the Gothamist LLC family.

The weekend editor will also be able to make the distinction between D.C. and the federal city. We are a news website that focuses on a vibrant city of 632,000 that exists far beyond the marble halls of the White House and Congress, though we don’t shy away from those places either.

Requirements: At least one year of full-time reporting or blogging experience, an instinct for what’s newsworthy and the skills to report it out, a ferocious drive and piercing wit, a deep and abiding interest in Washington, D.C., and the stamina to create four to six posts per day.

This position is a freelance contract. If interested, please send a cover letter, résumé, and three or four published clips to write@dcist.com. (Subject line “Weekend Editor.”)
